When new companies are founded, the entire organisation undergoes a developmental process, and often, so does the team.

Many of these processes have the same observable characteristics, whether a distinction is made in organisations between the pioneering, differentiation, integration and association phases, or more broadly between the foundation and growth phases.

Teams are also exposed to such consequences, and after an initial phase of unity, they no longer understand the world when conflicts arise. Teams go through relatively typical, almost standardised phases of cooperation. A phase at the beginning, usually emphasising harmony, in which conflicts tend to be avoided and held back and a group is formed, is often followed by a stormy phase of conflict and (role) differentiation. It is important to monitor all phases closely and provide support if necessary, to help a team find a constructive and synergistic way of working.
